The accountless API problem
Traditional API onboarding requires a human to create an account, obtain a key, choose a plan, and manage invoices. That flow is awkward for autonomous software. x402 moves the commercial handshake into HTTP: the resource advertises payment requirements in a 402 response and the client retries with authorization.
A practical agent loop
An agent discovers the manifest or calls an endpoint, validates the fixed price and network, checks its spend policy, signs locally, retries, and parses the settlement result. The seller receives payment before returning the protected result.
Why utility endpoints fit
URL, TLS, DNS, JSON, signature, and hashing tasks are bounded, machine-readable, and easy to price per request. They avoid subscriptions for occasional work and are straightforward to compose into larger workflows.
